We studied the relationship between microclimate and nest-site selection in the Pohnpei Micronesian Kingfisher (Todiramphus cinnamominus reichenbachii) which excavates nest cavities from the mudlike nest structures of arboreal termites (Nasutitermes sp.) or termitaria. Mean daily high temperatures at termitaria were cooler and daily low temperatures were warmer than at random sites in the Cited by: 8. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announces the availability of the Revised Recovery Plan for the Sihek or Guam Micronesian Kingfisher (Halcyon cinnamomina cinnamomina).

This subspecies, which was found only on the island of Guam, was federally listed as endangered in Actions Needed: The goal of this recovery plan is to reestablish a viable population of sihek on Guam.

Therefore, this plan focuses on the following actions to make this possible: (1) Coordinate and monitor recovery efforts; (2) Restore populations; To prevent extinction of the sihek, the highest priority recovery action is.

This plan serves as a revision of the recovery plan for the sihek. Guam Guam is the largest and southernmost island in the Mariana Archipelago (Figure 1). Guam is approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) long and 6 to 13 kilometers (4 to 8 miles) wide with.

Additionally, the refuge is known to hold important habitat for the Guam subspecies of the Micronesian Kingfisher. Recovery plans for the kingfisher include reintroduction of the bird from captive breeding programs (USFWS, b).

The Mariana Crow is also found in. Our results will facilitate recovery efforts for the critically endangered Guam Micronesian Kingfisher and provide a basis for sex determination in the 11 other endangered congeners in the Pacific. The Guam kingfisher is a medium-sized bird with a large head and strong beak.

It is an aggressive bird that establishes and defends nesting territories, and it has a loud, raspy, distinct call. This species was once found only on the island of Guam but is now extinct in the wild.

Avian Biology News Avian Biology News NC State study shows bird population estimates are flawed Most of what we know about bird populations stems from surveys conducted by professional biologists and amateur birdwatchers.

However, research from North Carolina State University shows that these data may be seriously flawed. A group of researchers led by Dr .The Guam Kingfisher, called the Sihek in Chamorro in the native language of Guam, is one of three species of Micronesian Kingfishers.

The other two species occur on the islands of Pohnpei where the birds seem to be thriving, and Palau, where the population is : Aquarium of The Pacific.
